Stolen blatantly from
theemdash as usual.
1. Do you outline?
Nope. I tried it once and it failed miserably for me. However, in the last two Nano's, I have had the opening scene in mind before I ever started writing. I did also try to determine some plot points. I don't think I used any of them.
2. Do you write straight through, or do you sometimes tackle the scenes out of order?
I go in order. Again, tried going out of order and just confused myself.
3. Do you prefer writing with a pen or using a computer?
Computer. Although I have done many a draft with the pen.
4. Do you prefer writing in first person or third?
Third.
5. Do you listen to music while you write?
Generally. However, I try to limit it to music that has no words. Xena soundtracks, Firefly soundtracks, classical.
6. How do you come up with the perfect names for your characters?
Depends on the character. Generally by simply opening a notepad, jotting down a few "starters" and tweaking. Once I hit on it, I usually hit RIGHT on it for me.
7. When you're writing, do you ever imagine your story as a television show or movie?
At least the action parts, yes.
8. Have you ever had a character insist on doing something you really didn't want him/her to do?
Every. Time. The fools.
9. Do you know how a story is going to end when you start it?
Well, since I write basically genre fiction, it usually has an ending you expect anyhow. But I don't know how I'm getting there or what it will say, no.
10. Where do you write?
In my office in front of the computer. I have also taken my notepad wandering and written in a pub, a seedy dive bar, a forest camping, a forest hiking, the bus many times, etc. Generally? The computer.
11. What do you do when you get writer's block?
If it's November, get over it and write crap anyhow. If it's any other time, I try to do something fun like watching a favorite movie or writing fan fiction.
12. What size increments do you write in (either in terms of wordcount, or as a percentage of the fic as a whole)?
Well, again, if it's November, 1700 a day. Heh. I did try 100 in all of January, thinking it would be good, but I got to about 300 and stopped. It was day 10. *roll eyes* I try to stop in the middle of sentences and in places where I know the next thing coming up. I'd still say "small increments" here.
13. How many different drafts did you write for your last project?
The last project I completed? That would have been the last TC article I did. And very probably, two. The rough and a more polished version of the same. I was probably "under the gun" and had no idea what to write about.
14. Have you ever changed a character's name midway through a draft?
Minor characters, yes. I tend to pick names with the same flavor sometimes and they don't work out. Major characters, only once.
15. Do you let anyone read your story while you're working on it, or do you wait until you've completed a draft before letting someone else see it?
Short stories, after a draft. Nano's, while I'm writing I share w/the Amazons. The one novel I finished my brother read over my shoulder while I was typing.
16. What do you do to celebrate when you finish a draft?
The dance of joy, natch.
17. One project at a time, or multiple projects at once?
Multiple. I never finish anything it seems.
18. Do your stories grow or shrink in revision?
Shrink. I use a lot of "So" and "Usually" and a variety of other sentence starters. I also go around using the same word over and over without really meaning to. Shrink.
19. Do you have any writing or critique partners?
I suppose if I ever finished something, yes. I'm sure I could drum up a few takers. Then there's the entire Toasted Cheese community I could post to. Or the Amazons, although I've a feeling they'd just pat me on the head and say 'woot'.
20. Do you prefer drafting or revising?
Revising...my own work. I enjoy reading something and thinking, "Wow. I wrote that!" and the yummy pride in the tummy of what the reader will think. Revising Amazon posts - so over it. They don't listen and I get frustrated and just end up rewriting it, which means it comes out "me" instead of them and I know it and I hate it. I don't mind giving an overall view of what I think is going on, but I've gotten far away from that at this point. Guess I need to go back.
In other news - Only 2 kittens left. I miss the other 3. *sigh* Had a good overnight camping in the forest where I saw a ton of deer (okay, the same two groups of deer a bunch of times) and got to eat a lot of bbq. Go bbq in the forest! I also got a RAVE yearly review from my boss and he told me this means I will get .... more money! (A small %, I'm sure, but more is more.) I look forward to that.
